In 1958 the famous photographer Martien Coppens (1908-1986) made a special book. It’s s a totally different book than his other ones. Not the landscape and the people are depicted in it, every shot figures the wood of De Peel in all its forms. Driftwood mirrored in the wate, trees scorched by fire, abandoned peat hopes; they do really look like monsters.
The attention by Parr and Badger for this book in their standard work about photobooks makes it a popular collector’s item.
Monsters van de Peel can also be found in the 2012 book publication “The Dutch Photobook” (NAi publishers).
