In addition to timeless beauty, there is also something called everyday beauty. Laundry fluttering on a clothesline can be beautiful in a very modest and unassuming way. A wall with a blue door, two unevenly placed windows, an electrical box, and a garden gate can suddenly form an interesting abstract composition. This is beauty that doesn’t immediately stand out, that doesn’t catch the eye right away. Often, it doesn’t catch the eye at all; you only notice it out of the corner of your eye. As soon as you focus on it, it almost slips away again. It’s all the more impressive, then, that Allard Kaai has managed to capture this everyday beauty in photographs.
