The book ‘Almost Nature’ presents a selection from the work of Gerco de Ruijter from the past decade. His work is a quest for the pure , unspoilt , natural landscape and to the completely culturally determined landscape with all gradations in between. Landscape or abstraction? Or both? As a spectator you shuttle from one sensation to another, and back again. The photos in ‘Almost Nature’ are indeed pictures of the earth, yet they are alienated, as if you lose your grip on the world.
Gerco de Ruijter (1961) lives and works in Rotterdam. He studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and won the Drempelprijs voor Autonome Kunst (Drempel prize for fine arts) in 1993. Since then he has had many solo and group exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad. His work is included in several important museum, private and corporate collections.
