Educated in Florence, Italy, the Swedish-born artist Urban Larsson (b. 1966) moved to Amsterdam in 1991. Since 2007 he has worked in the former studio of George Hendrik Breitner (1857–1923) on Prinseneiland in Amsterdam.
Urban is a contemporary artist who works exclusively from observation, with his method and visual philosophy rooted in the painting traditions of the past. The majority of his portraits, landscapes and still lifes are held in private collections across Europe and the United States. His prestigious portrait commissions have earned him international recognition.
This catalogue provides an overview of his oeuvre, while the art-historical essay by Sabine E. Craft-Giepmans and the interview by Edwin Becker place Urban Larsson’s paintings in their historical and contemporary context.
